Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary spectacle
Doctor Who

In 1963, on November 23rd, Doctor Who made its groundbreaking debut, captivating fans and non-fans with imaginative tales. In celebration of the series’ 60th anniversary, British television unveils numerous initiatives, featuring David Tennant’s surprising return as the legendary Time Lord. Additionally, an emotional retrospective video, chronicling six decades of the show, has been released on YouTube.

David Tennant’s epic comeback

Last year, Disney and the BBC inked a global content distribution pact, which is now a reality. Three TV specials, celebrating the series’ 60th anniversary, are set to be globally distributed on Disney+. Renowned actor David Tennant, who previously portrayed the Tenth Doctor from 2005 to 2010, is poised for another regeneration as the Fourteenth Doctor.

His historic partner, Donna Temple-Noble, portrayed by the talented Catherine Tate, will also return.

The specials and their formidable foe

Three specials are scheduled for release on November 25, December 2, and December 9. The specials are called “The Star Beast”, “Wild Blue Yonder”, and “The Giggle”, respectively.

In these new adventures, the protagonists confront one of the most menacing foes ever – the Toy Maker. This character, originally introduced in an early Doctor Who serial in April 1966, was played by the British actor Michael Gough. The Toy Maker, an eternal being with limitless powers, challenges the Doctor and allies. He engages them in childlike games and threatens to imprison them inside toys. In these new episodes, Neil Patrick Harris takes on the role of the antagonist.

The cast of these specials, with showrunner Russell T. Davies returning, features Yasmin Finney as Rose Temple-Noble (Donna’s daughter) and Miriam Margolyes. Also included are Ruth Madeley, Jacqueline King, Karl Collins, and Jemma Redgrave.

Looking to the future: The Fifteenth Doctor

The Doctor Who Christmas special will unveil the introduction of the Fifteenth Doctor. Ncuti Gatwa, known for his role as Eric in “Sex Education”, will become the first Black actor to take the TARDIS. This special, along with the fourteenth season of the traditional series, arriving in 2024, will also be distributed globally on Disney+.
