The motivation behind the latest tragedy in Florida seems to be racial hatred. The weapons, an AR-15 assault rifle and a Glock pistol, had been obtained legally. On the day commemorating the 60th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, envisioning a just and anti-racist America, a mass shooting occurred in the United States.

Three African-American individuals were killed: Angela Michelle Carr, 52 years old; Joseph Laguerre Jr., 19 years old; and Jarrald De’Shawn Gallion, 29 years old. The perpetrator, Ryan Christopher Palmeter, 21 years old, had also planned to target an African-American university but was turned away before he could do so. Later, he returned to the store and opened fire on them before taking his own life.

The weapons used in the massacre, an AR-15 assault rifle and a pistol, had been legally purchased by the 21-year-old perpetrator. However, there were swastikas on the rifle, and the young man had previously been reported for domestic violence in 2016 and had been hospitalized in a psychiatric facility. It remains a mystery how he was able to obtain the weapons despite these past incidents.

The motivation behind the attack emerged from a manifesto found on the perpetrator’s computer. Sheriff T.K. Waters stated that the young man harbored hatred towards African-Americans and wanted to eliminate them. Before the attack, he had sent a message to his parents, asking them to spread his racist manifesto on media and social platforms.

Despite condemning the massacre, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis highlighted mental illness as the primary cause of such events, rather than addressing the issue of firearms. President Joe Biden, on the other hand, condemned white supremacism and the attack itself. He announced a federal investigation into the attack, considering it a possible hate crime and act of violent extremism. Biden expressed regret that the tragedy occurred near the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington for racial equality. He emphasized the need to combat white supremacism and to not remain silent in the face of such events.
